Planning a group outing is stressful.

It can be difficult having to coordinate, plan, and join novel activities. For many people, it's not that they don't want to explore local adventures–the logistics just tend to become overwhelming and difficult to track.

How co.ord answers the problem

Control

A system that allows for high control over crowd composition, size, and activity details

Activity Focused

Coordinating participant–specific group activities rather than focusing on making long term friends

Consolidated

Create, plan, and seek participants for group activities in one cohesive space

Anna's friend's are all busy the weekend she's back in town, but she really wants to try out this escape room that just opened up.

Matt is in town for the weekend and wants to join a nearby escape room activity

Easily create, filter, and view your activities

Create any activity of your choice and categorize them based on your needs and wants.

View potential participants before accepting

Quickly communicate with potential hosts and participants to make the most out of your time, especially for time or quantity sensitive activities

Request activities near you and view details at a glance

Find activities custom tailored to your interests; filter by date, group size, location, category, and more.

View current activities and activity details at a glance

85% of interviewees reported using unrelated apps to find groups for activities, which muddles the results for all parties involved, leading to inefficient search efforts and discouraged users.

Key results from unmoderated surveys

People often report frustration around having to repeatedly find and reiterate reminders of the details as a group activity nears

If people cannot coordinate activities with their close or mutual friends, they tend to find more success or willingness to turn to online apps for recruitment

I want to....
  • Control crowd composition and size
  • Feel somewhat confident that I will garner a response after posting
I want to avoid....
  • Feel helpless due to lack of a response or the need to constantly repeat the details
  • Deviating far from an app's intended purpose since that makes it hard to coordinate a quality group
I don't mind....
  • Joining activities with new people if I know their basic info, especially if I know at least one other person in the group.
  • Spending more initial time with setup if it means I'll have an easier time managing activities later

Proactive Planner

Anna

  • Floats in many social circles but doesn’t firmly belong to any one niche.
  • Lives out of state from most of her old colleagues, friends, and connections
  • Likes to explore new activities and interactive spaces

Passive Participant

Matt

  • Typically finds local events interesting, but doesn't have a core group of people to attend with
  • Has not put down roots anywhere in the past few years
  • Finds planning a pain, and is typically not excited to initiate hangouts and activities
  • Wants to find lower effort connections to explore fun activities without feeling lost in the big city
User Journey

Testing

Experimented with the idea of “flexible time,” which would allow users to set multiple dates and times and pool them together for participants to choose from. This did not fit into the time constraints for further iteration and was not determined to be part of MVP.

Common User Archetypes

Final Thoughts

I would love to reincorporate the  “flexible” time and date ranges, where users can input a range of dates and times and select the option that best suits everyone's availability. While it was not an MVP, it was definitely a feature that I felt embodied the "all-in-one" planning aspect of co.ord.

The most important thing in time-constrained projects is to scope out and prototype the most important features first, so that you can run them through real users. Refinement can always come after you receive feedback.
